While the idea of in-between colors isn’t new, we’ve been seeing these intriguing hues rise to prominence, especially in recent paint brand announcements for Color of the Year. Shades like Benjamin Moore’s Cinnamon Slate—a rich brownish-purple—and Quietude, the soft blue-green from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, are shining examples of the growing interest in non-traditional, complex colors this year.

In-between colors bring something unique to interior design. They not only introduce interest by defying easy categorization but also feel inherently livable. These hues, with their layered undertones, don’t overwhelm a space but instead create an effortless depth. “In-between colors are about celebrating the subtleties in color,” says designer Nadia Watts. “They create a more nuanced, confident statement without overpowering the room. As foundational colors, they flow seamlessly throughout the house, providing warmth, comfort, and a soothing continuity.”

In smaller spaces, such as bathrooms or cozy rooms, these colors can take center stage, offering an eye-catching but gentle focal point. A touch of gloss—on the ceiling or trim—can elevate this effect further. “The reflective sheen can help a small room feel more expansive, while still creating that inviting, luxurious vibe,” adds Watts.

In spaces like a dining room, the depth of in-between colors fosters a welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for entertaining. Cinnamon Slate, for example, is sophisticated and pairs beautifully with rich materials like leather, warm woods, and brushed gold.

These colors also interact uniquely with light, especially in rooms with large windows or skylights. The subtle shift in undertones throughout the day—from morning light to the dimmer tones of dusk—brings an added layer of visual interest.

Designers’ Tips for Incorporating In-Between Colors

We reached out to interior designers for their expert tips on how to work with these captivating shades throughout your home. According to Melissa Read, creative director at Studio Burntwood, “In-between colors are key for creating rooms that feel layered and lived-in. These shades adapt beautifully to shifting light. For example, Little Greene’s Rolling Fog—a serene blend of taupe and gray—offers a sense of grounding.” She also highlights Farrow & Ball’s Dead Salmon, a soft, earthy pink that works wonders in spaces like a master bedroom or hallway, especially when paired with natural textures like jute, velvet, or leather.

When it comes to greens, Read suggests opting for nuanced tones instead of bold forest greens, which can quickly feel dated. A softer green allows you to embrace the color trend in a more subtle, timeless way.

Interior designer Andrea Goldman calls these shades “non-color colors,” pointing out that they make a statement without being overly defined. “They offer impact without screaming any single color,” she says. Some of Goldman’s favorites include Benjamin Moore’s Calico Blue (a calming blue-green) and Black Forest Green, a dark green with black undertones. “These shades create a feeling of sophistication and can easily transition from one room to the next.”

One powerful approach to incorporating these hues is through color-drenching, or using them extensively across walls, ceilings, and trim for a cohesive, immersive feel. As Emily Tucker of Emily Tucker Design notes, colors like Cinnamon Slate can create a soft, sophisticated atmosphere throughout a room when applied generously.

For kitchens—often the heart of the home—designer Glenna Stone suggests in-between colors like Benjamin Moore’s Dolphin, a subtle blend of green and gray with earthy undertones. “These shades help maintain warmth in the space without feeling too bold, and they pair beautifully with natural wood accents,” Stone explains.

The Timeless Appeal of In-Between Colors

In-between colors are also at home in earthy, nature-inspired schemes. From muted browns and greens to amber tones, these shades often echo the complexity of natural elements. Designer Marcus Mohon of Mohon Interiors embraces the changing light that in-between colors can bring to a space. “They remind me of how light changes throughout the day—from the cool tones of early morning to the warm, amber hues of sunset,” he says. “These colors offer mystery, depth, and charm, and they can transform a space without the need for a defined color.”

Benjamin Moore’s Castle Walls, a perfect example of a color that can’t easily be described, is one of Mohon’s favorites. “Is it green? Is it gray? Maybe a little blue? I love it as the main color on my living room walls.”

Although in-between colors have made waves recently, their appeal goes beyond short-lived trends. Shades like blue-greens, gray-blues, and muted purples are timeless and sophisticated, making them an excellent choice for walls in any home.
